Insecure Writer's Support Group

It's another 1st Wednesday of the month and time for Alex J. Cavanaugh's IWSG, a support group for the weary writer. I have to say that this month hasn't produced much writing. Initially I was upset about that as I had two great writing goals set - one was a scheduled alarm three days a week. The second was to write something on a daily basis, even if it was one sentence.

Now, however, I feel my WIP is on hold for a couple of months until I get a book of my short stories and poetry out. About this I'm okay, because there are so many other things going on and sometimes it's good for ideas about the book and where it's going to marinate. But another area I'm not pleased about is exercising. My knee flared up again, so tennis was down for a couple of weeks, but I have yet to get back to it, and it's not because of pain.

God has been blessing me a lot, and I'm looking forward to Friday's Celebrate the Small (and Big) Things. Until then, I will be reading and supporting my support group buddies.

  1. Sometimes I feel like a pinball machine with all the projects demanding my time! The good news is, it means we're staying creatively busy, right? That's my spin. I hope your knee heels-- I get really bugged when physical pain keeps me from working out!

    1. I do like being busy as long as there's product. The inflammation did keep me from working out, but now I just hadn't gotten back to it. Today it was raining, so can't do it.

  2. Sorry to hear about your knee. I hope it gets better. I know how it feels that you want or need to do some physical activity but your body is not playing nice with you.

  3. Sometimes I have a hard time prioritizing with my writing. It looks like you have a solid plan though. Keep it up. :)

  5. I love reading your posts Nancy, it is I....cellphoneitis! Ha Ha Ha...I do love my phone....when your stuck with an old clam shell from Walmart for years....this is truly a treat!! Dependability! Okay.....sorry about your knee....I have bad hips! My heritage is German, so my Mother tells me we are like the German Shepard dogs....they have bad hips....It can be a true pain, and creates lack of sleep and more Advil please! Later on today....because of the advice I took a peek at between visiting so many blogs...I am going to the library to settle in with reading about creative writing, and going to pick up a nice novel and be aware of the writer....I think that may be helpful. Need to learn to relax, just sit and write. We all have those days where we don't even want to go near the computer, and just do something else.....I crochet.....so I do my best thinking while crocheting. I wish only the best for you, take care of your knee....your such a nice person....I get that from your writings.

    1. So your mother compared you to German Shepards! :) Don't overdo the Advil though. Have you tried Alieve - supposed to be better for you.

I'm glad you're enjoying my posts. I've been reading so many posts too, it's crazy!

  6. I totally agree with you. Just because you aren't writing doesn't mean you aren't getting something constructive done. Plot points can become clearer, new ideas can spring up, and your character can gain depth in your mind. Good luck with you short story collection. :-)

    1. Thanks Lexa. I do feel good about not forcing the WIP and about the book on stories and poetry.

  7. I'm sorry about your knee! But you're right. Even when we're not writing, we're "writing." Figuring things out, working on character details, and untangling plots. I have a feeling you're writing even though you haven't put words on the page. Good luck to you!

  8. For a writer, reading is technically research in what to do and what not to do. Hope your knee feels better soon.

  9. Sorry to hear about your knee. I hope your swinging that racket soon. As to writing - it sounds like you've got a lot to do. I've noticed the WIP stuff comes in waves. Sometimes one writes a lot, and sometimes almost nothing. Kind of like the rest of life ;)

  12. I have a lot of different projects going on at the moment, and it's hard to find the time to fit them all in! It makes it much easier to prioritise :)

  13. Everything in good time. And I am with you about the exercise. Weather has been a factor but with as much as I sit with the day job and the writing, I need to get up and move more. Hope your knee gets better!

    1. Yeah. I seem to have a problem with exercising and dieting at the same time too. Too much effort to actively do both! My knees better I believe, but it's been raining off and on a bit.

  14. I think the physical act of writing is a portion of the overall writing process. The hand stops but the brain continues... (Come to think of it, I wonder if the brain ever stops... it continues with writerly-activities even on a sub-conscious level...)
Nancy I hope your knee gets better soon!

  15. I find scheduling an alarm often backfires since I end up staring sleepily at the curser instead of writing. I need at least as much sleep as I get, usually more.

    1. It was my phone alarm doing the daytime to tell me to stop whatever I'm doing and get writing.

  16. Project/time management is always a challenge. I totally suck at it. Even the few time that I pencil in time for a project, my creativity rebels and wants to work on something else. Sorry to hear about your knee troubles. Those reoccurring flare up type injuries can really suck all the fun out of things.

  17. Injuries are unfortunately also an excuse for you to not do things you should. For writing challenges and self-set deadlines, I realize I haven't developed the "sticking" power. I start then give up too soon. Blasted!
