Who's a jackanapes? Saving that word...

The rules for this fun blog hop are as follows:

1. Create a lovely blog post that links back to The Feather and The Rose blog - our host.

2. Pick an old word you want to save from extinction to feature in your blog post. It really must be an old word, not just a big one. We are trying to save lovely archaisms, not ugly giants (for example, "Dihydrogen Monoxide" is not an acceptable choice). Luciferous Logolepsy is a great database of lovely words if you're having trouble coming up with something on your own.

3. Provide a definition of your word. Use your word in a sentence (or even a short paragraph) vaguely related to the theme we have chosen this week. You may also add visual or musical interpretations of your word or your sentence. In fact, add anything that moves your creative spirit.

4. Add your post to the linky list below (sometimes it's added later in the day). Then hop to as many other blogs as you can in search of as many wonderful words as possible!

5. Use as many of the words as you can on the people in your life. Do leave us a note or add something to your own post to let us all know what wonderful old word you whipped out to befuddle your friends and relations.

Today's theme is: Unicorn

My word for today is: Jackanapes - 1400-1450, late Middle English; noun 
1. an impertinent, presumptuous person, especially a young man; whippersnapper 2. an impudent, mischievous child 3. archaic. an ape or a monkey

And here's this week's writing:

"Jackanapes-jackanapes-jackanapes! Jack..a..napes! Ja..ack...an..apes! Jackanapes!" Simon jumped up and down on his rocking unicorn, his head bouncing along like a bobble head on speed.

"Simon, you're going to break your little neck, and you're driving me crazy! Cut it out. I'm sorry I called you that. It just slipped out. You are not a jackanapes. This is 2013; that word no longer exists!"

Under her breath, Simon's mother muttered, "Oh, but the phrase holy terror is alive and well."

After a pause, Simon jumped off his unicorn and ran around the house crooning, "Holy terror, holy terror, ho...oly terrrrrooorrrr!!! 

Celebrating A Slow Pace

Who said taking small steps along the way is not the pace you're meant to take? Who knows, but often times Americans get so impatient when it comes to reaching our goals and attaining our dreams. If they don't happen as soon as we expect them to, then we either try and rush them and never get to where we truly want to be or give up. I've been there, done that!

Today I'm celebrating waiting... taking time to learn what I need... waiting for the right circumstances to show before I act.

A prayer I made this week was: "God, if I'm meant to speak up about my book [to particular people in my life], then please open the door wide where I will easily be able to go through it and speak." Guess what? That next day, the door opened for me to speak to those people, where if I didn't talk, there would have been awkward silences. With these folks, that never happens as there are always others around taking their attention. To tie this to the above statements, I prayed, waited for God to create the right circumstances and acted.

I'm also celebrating:

* Going to a panel discussion to learn about promoting my work.

* Going to the Christian Writers Seminar in Castro Valley last weekend and being inspired to publish a book of short stories and poetry.

* Having connections to join one or two writing critique groups. The one I go to at the main library is good but very rushed because of time constraints.

* Pegasus Books consigning my book. So they're at the Berkeley and Oakland stores in the Local Authors sections. I had to order more books to put in the Solano store, so they'll be there after I get them. I have to wait. :)
