A Writing Prompt to Die For

  1. Straight away Sandra understood what Dr. Meanders was saying, and her breath caught at the base of her throat. Dr. Meanders touched her on the shoulder, and asked, “Are you okay? Can I get you some water?”

First her eyes rose to meet the doctor’s and then her breath gushed out of her, dislodging the blockage. Along with her breath, was the remaining feeling of being stuck and useless. She laughed and exclaimed, “Am I okay? Am I okay? What are you asking?”

    “Sandra, please…”

Sandra cut him off. “I can’t believe you asked me that!” Sitting on the examination table, her body swooned, and the doctor helped her to lie down.

“There’s no reason to be shocked. You knew this could happen at any time.”

But Sandra was shocked, and she stared at her doctor incredulously.

“You’re looking quite pale, Sandra. Let me get the nurse to bring you some water.”

“Don’t bother, Doctor. Don’t bother. I’d gotten darker than normal anyway. You know we just got back from Mexico.”

“Well, it seemed that was the treatment you needed.”

Finally, Sandra could accept the truth. That morning she and David returned back from their vacation. She had felt she was going to die, because nothing was ever going to change.

“I know you had been trying for what, almost five years now?”

“Six and a half, including time we’ve been trying to adopt.”

“Well, now, there’s no need to go through that rigamarole anymore.”

Sandra jumped up, gave Dr. Meanders a death-grip of a hug, and said, “You are so right!”

She ran out of the office, laughing. She couldn’t stop laughing until she returned home to David. After a moment of shock, he gave Sandra a death-grip of a hug, and they both laughed like crazy fools.

  2. I can't wait to read the prompts. I'm on a blog-reading frenzy, so no time right now, but I may be back. Great story!
